Cristina Fernández: Creating For The Sake Of It

Cristina Fernández: Creating For The Sake Of It

I came across Cristina Fernández’s Matisse-inspired shapes on Instagram, and subsequently fell in love with her curvy ceramic silhouettes. The 29-year-old artist lives in Valencia, Spain and has been making things since before she can remember (as is the case with many makers). Not only are her works of art beautiful and classic, but they also serve as functional household items (a vase, a pot, a pitcher). Here’s why Fernández creates.

When did you get started as an artist?

Cristina Fernández: I really believe that the word artist is very big. I've been doing creative things all my life, since I was a little girl I went to drawing classes. My mother always said it was the only way to relax a bit. I do not remember any time in my life without doing anything creative.

What or who are you inspired by?

Cristina Fernández: The things that inspire me the most are everyday objects and nature always. I am also very inspired by the current moment we are living. There are many creative people doing wonderful things in many parts of the world. I feel really inspired by this, it encourages me to create and to do things.

Why do you create?

Cristina Fernández: Creating in my life is a necessity, everything is born of the need to develop creatively and do things. It does not matter if I paint or make pottery, I just need some sort of art session where I make things.

What does being creative mean to you?

Cristina Fernández: For me being creative is something innate. Something you are born with, a quality more in your personality and in your way of being. It is an internal force that pushes you to discover with what creative form you feel most comfortable.

I love it when I discover people who are not dedicated to the art world, who have random jobs but have a creative soul and develop different things to satisfy this creative impulse. For me that is to be creative.

What are you most proud of?

Cristina Fernández: To have been brave enough to show the world what I like to do.

What is your goal as an artist?

Cristina Fernández: I do not have a goal. I really just hope I never get tired of doing what I do — continuing to fill with new ideas, and from there the future will tell.
